I rinse my filter cartilages once a month just to get the nasty stuff out but I don’t replace with with new because the filter will still have “good” bacteria.
I do a 25% water change each week usually by vacuuming the gravel you have taken out enough water to be the right %. Then add new but take the chlorine out!
