Let your aquarium run a few days before adding new fish this allows the water to cycle. If you skip this you may loose fish.

I also like to add meds to the tank just as a precaution for adding new fish.

Get you an agile eater. They stay mostly on the walls so I get Apple snails they eat algae also but they go all over the tank. I also have bottom feeders. Mine is a Albino Cory Catfish. He will also eat fish waste and any extra food that falls to the bottom.

good starter fish are neon's....Molly's....Guppies....Tetras.....sward tails ect ect.

Live plants are better then fake as they aid in keeping good water quality.
Just make sure you get Beginner plants like java moss.

Always rinse new plants as they may contain snails.

Rinse your gravel and decor before adding.

Only add a few fish at a time. If you add 20 at one time it will cause your water perimeters to go nuts and you may loose fish or gets lots of diseases.

I rinse my filter cartilages once a month just to get the nasty stuff out but I don't replace with with new because the filter will still have "good" bacteria.

I do a 25% water change each week usually by vacuuming the gravel you have taken out enough water to be the right %. Then add new but take the chlorine out!

There is plenty of free advice on the internet regarding this topic. You want to be sure of the tropical fish before you start your tank. Some like cold water like the gold fish others may like warmer temperatures. Goldfish are "cute" but they are also messy. They Poop alot. Our first fish were convicts or black zebra cichlids. They are hardy and take care of themselves. However, they are more aggressive and if you get a male and female you will have babies often. That's another thing. You want to make sure your fish are compatable otherwise they can kill or eat each other. I suggest you join a fish group on the internet and do research before you purchase a fish. The more advanced your hobby becomes, the more you will enjoy this hobby. Good Luck!
